The kinetic sculpture, titled Concentric Wave, is the largest Smith has produced to date and is permanently sited at The Harley Gallery, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. The sculpture straddles a four metre circular pond at the bottom of a red brick lined amphitheatre in the gallery garden.

"Conceived as a mechanical reflection of the water below, the piece is about simplicity, repetition, rhythm and balance." Smith explains.

Movement triggered sensors activate the piece as people approach. The ball gently rises and falls seemingly activating a mechanical ripple through the eighteen concentric rings. In reality cams, rods and gravity precisely control this motion.

  • tis beeewdiful but my only criticiscm is that the ball tends to go "up" much faster than it "falls" which ruins the effect a bit... :(

perhaps its just running backwards? :) i like it though :)

  • It's like a marble trying to splash into the water but can't so it keeps trying.

    "Dammit!... can't... get... through...."

Big wows. Got any for sale? :)

  • Now, if you could only connect this to my vacuum cleaner my house could clean itself! Really, this is sooo clever. Good for you! The art displayed on my own Sculpture Gallery is exciting, too. That's what art should do!
