The city of Troy, Michigan was facing a budget shortfall, and was considering closing the Troy Public Library for lack of funds. Even though the necessary revenues could be raised through a miniscule tax increase, powerful anti-tax groups in the area were organized against it. A vote was scheduled amongst the city's residents, to shut the library or accept the tax increase, and Leo Burnett Detroit decided to support the library by creating a reverse psychology campaign. Yard signs began appearing that read: "Vote to Close Troy Library on August 2nd - Book Burning Party on August 5th." No one wants to be a part of a town that burns books, and the outraged citizens of Troy pushed back against the "idiotic book burners" and ultimately supported the tax increase, thus ensuring the library's survival.

Many in Troy do not even bother to vote and many have supported the Tea Party or are very right wing. This campaign was effective and I'll bet people will begin to realize how important their votes are after this little fiasco. This small, isidious group has wiggled its way into political power and should be ousted asap.

You are confused.... I'm not against taxes in general... I know that many things are needed and are paid for with taxes. My beef (justified many times in this thread) is that with all the corruption in every level of government why do you guys automatically trust every word they say when it comes to raising someone elses taxes? The same people caught lying to us on a daily basis you trust completely and LIE to convince others to vote to raise taxes. WTG... sheesh.

Who said anything about killing? Typical of your lot, but I wouldn't expect much from a group of people that prides themselves in home-schooling.

Most people are against tax raises because it affects their wallet. Where Tea party, some Republicans (and you?) get confused is that Taxes PAY FOR THINGS. No one can afford everything, and everyone has to decide what to buy. Roads should be obvious. Libraries ought to be nearly as crucial. TPers in their uninformed rage fail to see that some things bought with taxes DO MATTER. Things that underpin FREEDOM. Like Libraries.

Here, I'll put this in perspective. The senate is about to vote for the internet sales tax, and MOST people are against it. This would be like if a group came out saying: "Vote against the internet sales tax, then the small mom and pop store closing party will be held after it passes! Who needs small mom and pop stores when we have WalMart?"

See? It's a lie... this is EXACTLY what they did here. Most people were against a tax raise!

Ya... people like liars as long as they lie to do the things they agree with. The problem is eventually they lie to do the things they disagree with but by then it's too late.

I'm not apologizing for the organization. I'm simply stating the truth. They didn't lie... it was a tax increase. The other side didn't "Get down to the bones of the matter".. they lied and twisted the truth which was simply that the local government was using the library as a scapegoat to raise taxes yet again instead of finding the money elsewhere. It's easy to convince uninformed people that they should vote to raise taxes to save a library, or feed the poor or spend more on education.

I know you're a troll and an apologist for an utterly repugnant organization that has created discord and chaos throughout the country, but.

The people who organized the campaign against the Tea Baggers got down to the bones of the matter. Not giving the library the money that it needs to run is the equivalent of destroying books. They used the book burning campaign to draw attention to yet another Tea Bagger plot to subvert the will of the people so that the Tea Baggers could be overthrown.

Um no.. you really should do a bit of research... we won... it was called the declaration of independance and the constitution... two documents who's sole intention is to LIMIT government. Unless you are a nazi and think the germans won?... I'm confused... You think that in the 1860's people became idiot lemming government followers? haha
