I couldn't tell you if it's direct current. I just saw it working there on the tracks when I came by and I started taking pictures.

its a electrocmagnet the thick black line in the middle going in a angle is the power supply. The power is connected from the cranes motor. The operator turns it off and on from the cab.

Where is this? In my country we leave all that scrap for the gypsies to collect. This is much better for the enviroment and gives the 'Soap dodger' types a way to make some cash.
