Thought for years to have been lost, this video clip from Kaihea's 2007 Belly Horror Show performance was recently unearthed and is presented here largely unedited.
Kaihea's original concept for that year's BHS was a Frankenstein theme, inspired by the scars on her body and the implants within it, plus the overall sense she carried with her that her body had become a battleground. As the performance date neared (she was hospitalized shortly before the performance, and took advantage of this time to have a co-conspirator steal from a linen closet the hospital gown she shredded for her costume), she cast off any sense of expressing what she was going through in terms of any existing horror trope - after all, she was living a real life nightmare, and everyone knew about it. So she opted instead to simply dance what she was going through: the terrifying diagnosis, the disorienting emergence from surgery, the long excruciating recovery with the future uncertain at best...I think most days all she knew with any certainty was that, if she could stay alive a few more months, she would be dancing, somehow, somewhere, and that I would be there with her.
