Jake has been adopted!

Jake the English Pointer chewing on a rawhide while at adoptions. Jake is 7 months old and gun shy. Being gun shy makes him a less than perfect hunting dog but he would be a great family pet. You can check out Jake and other adoptable cats and dogs at http://www.woodstocktexas.org

  • Thank you all for your comments and resources about curing gun shyness. Unfortunately, Jake's previous owners were not willing to make the effort. He was brought to a vet to be put down but they were talked into turning him over to the rescue. He was adopted and is thriving. But I will do the search so that Woodstock can direct people to that resource and hopefully prevent other dogs from getting taken out of their homes.

  • I have a English pointer named Jake! He looks different than that Jake!

  • I just got my 1 y.o. Chocholate back from 1 week of upland bird training becuase the trainer said she was gun shy. No **it she is gun shy. She has never heard a gun and he started blasting a 12 guage over her head on the 3rd day of training. If anyone out there is thinking of having thier dog trained ask the trainer what thier regimen is and when and how they introduce guns to the dog. AND DO NOT USE CADENCE KENNELS

  • its also important to keep them conditioned once they are gun broken....my little girl was gun broken and i didn't hear gun fire for almost a year..when i took her out to shoot doves she got gun shy again. and it wasn't because of just one shot its the multipul shots that were taken from all around. some times dogs can handel just one shot at a time but once you start getting a 10 to 15 shots going off from all around it gets kinda scary for them.

  • Yep. Gunshyness isn't a permanent thing. And using shot guns is the usual suspect. Of course with retrievers, it's much more important that they not be gun shy, because you're shooting with them at a heel or a sit in a heel position.

  • Google Steve Rafe and gunshyness to get the website for his program that cures gunshyness

  • Gunshyness can be cured. It's always cause by an idiot who shoots a 12 guage over the dog's head instead of starting with a blank pistol from a distance.

  • yup dats tru

  • Shy dogs can hunt too they just need a little more TLC that's all.
