Calling John Brown a terrorist from our perspective, nearly 150 years after the raid, is narrow minded. He was a hero to many during that time frame. This song was used as a marching hymn by the Northern soldiers who fought and died to ensure that the Union, dedicated to the proposition that ALL men were created equal, would endure. Brown wasn't the terrorist. Rather it was those supporting the foul institution of slavery that were terrorizing the spirit of the American republic.
