On September 21, 2011, the world watched in disbelief as the state of Georgia wrongfully executed Troy Anthony Davis despite major doubt about the case, including the recantation of seven of the nine non-police witnesses.
To protest this blatant injustice, the Georgia State Conference NAACP and several notable anti-death penalty organizations, including, Amnesty International-USA-Southern Region; Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty; and the Southern Center for Human Rights, demand that legislators from the upcoming legislative session conduct one more execution in Georgia-that is, the execution of the Death Penalty!
The first collaborative undertaking by organizers of Execute the Death Penalty is a mass rally at the Georgia State Capitol. The purpose of the rally is to galvanize support for anti-death penalty legislation authored by Senator Vincent Fort, educate the public about Execute the Death Penalty initiatives, and pursue justice for Troy Davis, albeit posthumously.
The rally will take place on Monday, January 9, 2012, on the first day of Georgia's legislative session. By gathering us together at the Capitol on this day, President Edward O. Dubose, of the Georgia State Conference NAACP intends to create a sense of urgency among legislators and the public about the need to abolish the Death Penalty in Georgia.
For more information about this and other Execute the Death Penalty initiatives, please contact Ms. Sheila Brown, Community Coordinator for the Georgia State Conference NAACP at ganaacpstate@gmail.com or President Edward O. Dubose at edubose252@aol.com.
