Team McCann suffers a setback. (With apologies to "der Untergang" ("Downfall"))

Whilst this may be a light-hearted treatment of an issue in the Madeleine McCann case, albeit with several 'in' jokes, the profile of the Tanner sighting was raised in the Spring of 2009 by Channel 4 "Cutting Edge" documentary.

In the programme, Gerry McCann seems to be questioning the accuracy of Tanner's account even though the way she describes things matches the Wilkins account of the conversation he was having with Gerry at the time.

The documentary also dealt with the Smith sighting of someone who looked like Gerry (and carried a child like Gerry) hurrying throught the streets of Praia da Luz that evening with a child in their arms. The programme attempted to suggest that the Smith sighting and the Tanner sighting were somehow linked, even though there was a significant time difference and the two 'abductors' were some distance apart heading in totally opposite directions.

OK, the abductor might have been retracing their steps, but hey, this guy was supposed to be organised, having been staking out the McCanns apartment all week. He then

1) picks the most inappropriate time possible for the abduction - with all those checks by the Tapas 9 it must have been like Piccadilly Circus

2) chooses, in Maddie, the heaviest child to abduct - the one most likely to wake and hardest one to get through the apartment window.

3) spends 30 minutes milling around either side of the complex with an abducted child in his arms.

The only conclusion you can draw is that the Smith sighting is the only true sighting, and that Tanner's account is a figment of someone's imagination.

  • Tanner's 'description has changed significantly over time, to the Egg Man, Monster Man, Bundle Man, Cooperman and Nose Man. She also picked out Robert Murat as the villain and maintained this allegation until withdrawing it in April 2008 in an interview with the Leicestershire Police.'
