    yeah the movie was ridiculous!! It was a simple love story about a boy from the wrong side of the tracks who falls in love w a girl-gets her pregnant-they abort the baby-toss it off the bridge-Preacher sees them-he is also in love w her, and Billy Joe feeling remorse for the abortion-jumps off the bridge. Supposedly-Bobbie Gentry found this song somewhere. It was in public domain, so she paid for it and made it her own.
