A ride and commentary on how these old hand operated Elevators operate. This is a couple of clips and images of these elevators in downtown Calgary. Very nice historical elevators and have been preserved in this condition.

Just checked it out! That's a very beautiful example of earlier elevator design with the open cage shaft and car. Hope it is preserved exactly as is for many years to come.

Let them girls scream for Justin Bieber all they want, I'll just ride and film this magnificent means of vertical transportation. It's elevators like this that make elevator riding a joy!

The old Dept. of Public Health building in San Francisco had an automatic elevator with the same kind of roller gate. That was 20 years ago, I don't know if it still is. This is only the second elevator I've seen with that type of gate. Lovely.

Thanks for the video. Loved it and it helped me in some research. There is a hotel in Texas currently being restored with similar systems. I fouund out thanks to this video that Otis introduced the self leveling lever in 1915. So I am hoping that the elevators in this hotel which are from 1929 would be self leveling and therefore easier to mantain. They still have the lever and newspaper articles suggest they plan to restore at least 1 of them. The hotel is the Baker in Mineral Wells, Texas.

I can still remember growing up in Baltimore back in the '50s/'60s and all the department stores and office buildings had manually operated elevators similar to these. By 1970 only a few buildings still had them and I missed the old cars - much more fun to ride on in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this video clip of these beautiful vintage elevators and bringing back pleasant childhood memories for me. I applaud the building's owners for keeping them preserved.

Thanks! Did you see my manually operated caged elevator from the late 1800's? Check out the video response.

Wow, a manually operated elevator, great to see them in such great shape and un-modernized

Yes! I was very happy they allowed me to do this video! Apparently these elevators were originally chain driven and were changed to cable. So I guess in a way, they were modernized.
