im going on exchange to Tokunoshima, thats a village on one of the islands off okinawa. is the dialect much different from main land japanese?

yes it is, but they all speak 標準語standard Japanese perfectly well, so I wouldn't worry about that. have fun!

well, unfortunately I have only been to ko tao and koh phan gnan in Thailand so can't really compare to Phuket...
But the beach was nicer in Okinawa, I thought, because what I saw in Thailand was very exploited... didn't really like it..

Tokashiki is really nice! I wish they would let you snorkel the other areas of the beach though.

I was in Okinawa in 68-70.
Beautiful island.
Many fond memories.
I was stationed in Sukiran.
Loved Bolo Point.
Anyone remember?
