Matrix # 82031 (Original release was on OKeh 41011)
And so we continue our look into 18 year old Gene Krupa's very first recording session with the second cut, "China Boy". Keep in mind that not only was this the first time Gene set foot into a recording studio, but this session also marks the first time a full set of drums were used - a teen-aged pioneer was Gene. :)
Perhaps it's because of Condon's involvement with the Mound City Blue Blowers at the time that Red McKenzie's name was on the record, but Red is actually nowhere to be heard on any of the 4 cuts.
The 4 tunes in this playlist were actually recorded at 2 different sessions, but all interviews I've seen & heard with Gene Krupa regarding this, he states these 4 cuts as his first "session" and to respect that point of view, I'm presenting 'em like that as well - in chronological order, of course. ;)
Hotcha!!!!! Gene can barely contain himself here - and I love it. ;)
The personnel for this landmark December 8, 1927 session are:
Jimmy McPartland - cornet
Frank "Teschmaker" Teschemacher - clarinet
Bud Freeman - tenor sax
Eddie Condon - banjo
Joe Sullivan - piano
Jim Lannigan - bass
Milton "Mezz" Mezzrow - cymbals
Gene Krupa - drums
Dig.....
You know it, blakie - thanks. :)
Nauck's really came through for me with these two 78's back in 2000 - no way I could've been able to afford the original OKeh 78's, not this clean. And these 1937 UHCA re-issues used the original stampers to boot!
