Gang sweeps in Plainfield result in 91 arrests
by Judith Lucas/The Star-Ledger
Thursday April 03, 2008, 4:26 PM

New Jersey State Police and Plainfield police officers broke up three of the city's most troublesome street gangs today, arresting 91 peo ple whom law enforcement say were responsible for much of the violence plaguing the area.

Police seized guns, crack co caine, marijuana, body armor, cash and a three-foot alligator in a series of pre-dawn raids that were launched Jan. 23, March 20, Wednesday and today.

"This will change the face of Plainfield," said Sgt. Steve Jones of the State Police of this morning's arrests.

Some of the more than 70 alleged gang members who were rounded up this morning are brought to a police van for transportation out of the Plainfield police department.
Those arrested ranged in age from 12 to 66 and came from Plainfield and Piscataway. They
face charges ranging from drug posses sion and distribution to at tempted murder.

Each had an affiliation to either the Clinton Avenue Posse, Lib Side Boys or 116 Boys. The names of the gangs reveal their territory - Clinton Avenue, Liberty Street and the 116 building of Elmwood Gardens apartment on West Sec ond Street.

They operated mostly on the northwest end of Plainfield, sell ing drugs and firing off their weapons at each other, cars, houses and at innocent bystanders, Plainfield Police Chief Edward Santiago said.

''They were pretty much going after each other for territory," Santiago said. ''They are drug dealers. They hang out near public housing and make quality of life untenable."

The arrests will not quell all the shootings, "but when you take that many people out, it makes a difference," he said.
A year ago, State Police swept into the city and arrested some 17 members of the Clinton Ave nue Posse and seized cash and weapons.
That raid made a huge differ ence, Santiago said. The streets were quiet from April to October. Shootings were down by 60 per cent. Crime overall was cut in half.
