Orange, Official Communications Partner for the Glastonbury Festival, today announced the Orange Sound Charge; the latest invention in the world of mobile charging technology with an innovative gadget that powers mobile phones using sound.
The Sound Charge uses an existing technology in a revolutionary way; by reversing the use of a product called Piezoelectric film within a specially designed t-shirt, allowing people to charge their mobile phones whilst enjoying their favourite act at Glastonbury.

Sounds pretty cool. Power in a 80dB sound sounds too small (0.0001W/m^2) to generate enough power unless you have large reservior battery which means it should take very long time to charge the battery.

80dB SPL is around 1Pa of pressure. Over a patch 20*30cm. This equates to a force of about 10 grams.
The peizioelectric film will compress by at most .001mm (at the pressure involved), yielding around a few dozen microwatts.
This is about enough energy - over the whole weekend - to produce several watt-seconds of power.
About what you'd get from plugging in a normal phone to a charger for 1-2 seconds.
