Almost hit by car on my new bike

Just got a brand new Kona Africabike 3 and was riding it home for the first time after taking delivery at Ozone bikes in Austin TX. Went to cross the crosswalk on the west side of the intersection to go up Bouldin from Barton Springs. A jeep Cherokee from the early 00's, license place GNC 457, drove into my crosswalk without looking at the road in front of them for about 10 consecutive seconds. They kept moving forward while making a left (cars turning left are statistically the deadliest kind besides ones piloted by drunks,, which this person could have been) without looking at the road, just looking back at the sidewalk on the side of the intersection they just pulled out of. A cop stationed at the ACL roadblock (blocking bouldin from barton springs to keep ACL traffic flowing) saw what happened. I looked to him and pointed my hand and pointed at the jeep driving away. He took the opportunity to put his cruiser in drive and go in the opposite direction and leave the whole scene behind even though he had the green light to follow the car and warn them to pay attention to where they are driving during the highest traffic congestion Austin sees besides South By South West. A pedicab stopped at the red light saw the whole thing and when I looked to them to see if I had a witness they commented "They don't do anything. He won't do anything," as the cop drove off. So I just continued on my way home as it was starting to rain. I saw a cop on the other end of bouldin who was stopped at another roadblock. I told him the story and without being too much of a dick he basically said that if they didn't hit me that basically they controlled their car well enough to not hit me and in the end I'm alright and that's all that matters. He also said it would have been nice if the other guy had at least pulled them over to warn them verbally that now is not the time to drive across pedestrian crosswalks without paying attention,,, as if there is ever really a good time to do that. I just can't believe he drove off instead of explaining those things to me himself. If somebody who makes over $60K a year could have taken 5 minutes to say... Something,, it would have been nice.

To think in 13 days I'm going to put in my packet for an APD slot for 2012. Wish me luck!

It would be nice to know the BAC of that driver. But that opportunity has passed.
