In this final video, we are finishing our dread maintenance 4 hours later. The other customers still have more hours to spend to finish their locs. Part 4 in this dreading in Bangkok series.
Heres where our dreading experience all got started. Introduction to the salon and the beginning of the dread maintenance. Part 1 of this dreading in Bangkok series.
Dread locs being maintained and started at 2 salons at Kao San road in Bangkok Thailand. There are 5 different employees doing the crochet hook method. Showing how different people who do dreads all day do it. They are very quick and effective. They roll the loc in their left hand and poke the .65 mm crochet hook straight into and through the loc, then quickly slide it out going in the same direction as the curve of the hook. They repeat thousands of times. This video is shot over the period of 4 hours to show how long it takes to do dreads and maintain them, even by skilled workers. This method is a necessity if you do locs professionally!
As I watch these videos I notice that their hand moves in two motions. One to pierce the loc, one to glide/curve the hook out.

  • is there any kind of place like this in san diego? How long do you need your hair to be for this method?

  • I've not personally heard of any salons doing this style in the states. As for the length, since locs are the formation of knots, the hair should be long enough for the knots to form at the thickness you want the loc.

  • at the base of the dread you twist ?

  • Any time there are groupings of loose hairs, they can be twisted so that the crochet hook can catch them easier to pull into the loc.

  • It's hard to tell because of how fast they are going, but are they pushing the hook ALL the way through the lock to pick up loose hairs on the opposite side? Or are they only pushing the hook part-way through?

  • Both
