You can hear Sumi Jo's early voice. Cecilia Bartoli also was there.

  • What year was recorded this video? Which disease suffered Karajan?

    Thank you for informing me.

  • @Zofzoeif About on 1987, I think.

  • Domine Deus??duet with the tenor?? he has to sit there listening to queen of the night, a gig that Sumi Jo doesnt even want to do because HvK asked her about the same dates, a year hence!!!! WHILE HE TALKS ABOUT MACHINE-GUNS...

SHES SAD BECAUSE YOU DIDNT GIVE GER THE JOB FOR THE EASTER DATES YOU AASKED ABOUT..("NOTHING TOO SPECIAL".."I DONT KNOW WHOS CONDUCTING")

WELL she didnt do what he asked her to!!! ATTACK THE NOTE LIKE HE SAID!

    so he's punishing her..

  • @dxhtz totally wrong...

  • Where does the name Hervet von Karajan come from.

I always knew him as Herbert von Karajan

  • @6109river OMG! I didn't realize my mistake until you said it! Thanks for correcting!

  • Honestly, I cried when I watched it. Seeing young Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo, whom nowadays are highly praised and cherished worldwide, being instructed by the ingenious Karajan is absolutely priceless. And it's particularly moving to see Sumi Jo receiving what I suppose was the greatest acknowledgement she'd been honored with up to that day. @smoothiw, thank you so much for sharing this footage with all of us!

  • I love how Sumi Jo sings one of the most difficult part of one of the most difficult soprano arias almost perfectly on command. Barely warmed up, just sitting down and smiling. No big deal or anything... lol

  • no, it doesn't "stop after the high F," it continues on, i'm a violinist and i've played this opera twice, you're incorrect

  • Sumi Jo and Karajan! A music god and goddess. if I ever meet them here on earth or in the afterlife , then I will be in music heaven indeed! thank you for sharing this!

  • Fantastico video !

  • @NRob84 If sung correctly by the right voice as it is here, then it will not hurt the voice.

  • @Anastasiary I think Karajan was practicing Jo and Bartoli for the Easter Salzburg Festival.

  • What kind of car was Karajan talking about near the beginning?

  • Interesting, I don't know much about voice (since I'm a violinist), is the Queen of The Night a piece that can ruin your voice if sung repeatedly as Karajan suggested?

  • the reverse is true. He famously took on a female Clarinettist (Sabine Meyer) for the BPO but the orchestra reacted badly to his choice.
