Dr. Ranney is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera at Mansfield University in Mansfield PA.
Music by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) , "Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht", op. 96 (Vier Lieder) no. 1 (1884), published 1886.
Words by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) , from Buch der Lieder, in Die Heimkehr, no. 87, published 1826/7

Death is the cool night.
Life is the sultry day.
It now grows dark; I'm drowsy,
The day has wearied me.

Above my bed rises a tree,
The young nightingale sings there, it seems;
She sings of naught but love -
I hear it even in my dreams.

  • Interesting recording! I hear this so often from women instead, though I've always thought it well suited for the male voice. Your timbre is quite lovely for Brahms, thought this keys seems very dark in general.

  • you sang Drin zingt twice rather than zie zingt von lauter liebe ...von lauter libe ich hor es .....( you know the rest) You have beatiful tone but you need to watch the word Mine and things with A vowels in them. I apreciated your temp with this song and the emotion you put into it.
