This video is a slideshow of images and sounds recorded entirely on public access land in and near the Cosumnes River Preserve in California's Central Valley and Delta (including agricultural land surrounding Staten Island, Twin Cities and Woodbridge Roads).
All images and field audio were recorded between November, 2007 and March, 2008 as the Sandhill Cranes returned to their ancient winter home in the Sacramento Valley. This migration has been going on for at least 10,000 years. But there are many problems ahead. 95% of the native wetlands of the valley have been drained, "developed" or planted
with crops that don't support these magnificent creatures. The future is dire for these ancient creatures. Many thanks to the humans whose efforts have preserved the remaining habitable areas and to the far sighted
leaders who will assure a future home as humans and cranes coexist in harmony.
We share these images in an effort to raise consciousness and appreciation of these incredible ancient creatures living amongst us in our modern
