@BlacktailDefense ......protect bases and assigned major SAM units to places that are appropriate.

@BlacktailDefense .....the many engineering/sustainment brigades that the US has. And additional Fires brigades would by assigned throughout the total force.
As for Air Defense purposes, the US military withdrew these larger AA units from it's brigades. It made them independent units so that they can be attached to units when needed. There is not point in having every unit armed with AA protection in Iraq or Afghanistan. They would be easy kills.
The US still has the Centurion system to ......

@BlacktailDefense So a unit like the 2nd Infantry Division like I just described would have 56 M1A2's, 86 M2/M3 Bradleys, 27 TOW equipped Strykers, 81 MGS's, at least 324 Javelin missiles launchers, countless AT-4's, 54 M777A1's, and 16 M109A6 Paladins. So if a unit such as that was operating in a rear area or a mobile reserve following behind a large armored advance, it would in fact be able to destroy any armor that it might encounter.
As for engineering, the force is bulked up by........

@BlacktailDefense Enough with what a brigade size should really be. Even if it is the size of a regiment then so what? There are still 4 BCT's in a division, so let's look at the 2nd Infantry Division. It has 1 Heavy BCT and 3 Stryker BCT's. That's still 15,400 men in a division. Plenty of men. You say it cannot absorb losses but the way it is deployed now, do you think they are taking ridiculous losses in Iraq or Afghanistan? If it needs further support one of the other BCT's would step in.

@franknbeans4761 "And regardless of changing the structure, it is in fact better, don't you agree?"
It's better, but still has too many holes. There is still too little vehicle-served heavy weaponry, nowhere NEAR enough Engineering assets, and only rudimentary organic Artillery and Air Defenses.
The biggest problem is still the size. 3900 troops are a stronger force than 3000, but Brigade-sized tasks entail a Brigade-sized capacity to endure casualties (i.e., 5000 troops).

@franknbeans4761 "Forget about the Ratel, the SBCT can still confront limited armored threats succesfully, even though it will never be deployed that way."
I'm not saying it will. What I'm saying is that a future enemy with armor to spare will make an SBCT very ineffective, very quickly --- unless other units have already made it safe enough for the SBCTs to deploy, of course.

@franknbeans4761 Looks like they DID change the SBCT structure --- so much for the "smaller, lighter, 3000-man, 330-Stryker" unit that the Army sold Congress on.
"The vehicle could stop behind any obstruction for cover, or just briefly anywhere and the Javelin can be fired. And the troops can dismount to shoot it, or shoot it out of the roof hatches of the vehicle."
Lot's of Special Pleading going on there. Meanwhile, a Ratel with an old GI-2 20mm autocannon can fight a running battle.
There's a slide in there written in Russian if I'm not mistaken. Do you speak Russian?
