We didn't have enough snow for XC skiing, but the ice is thick enough for skating. So, the crew of http://OutYourBackdoor.com outdoor action got into gear! My brother and I did a little speed skating on the Red Cedar River that flows through the MSU Campus in East Lansing, Michigan. We also broke out the ski poles and did some ski-skating moves. Lots of students watched and cheered us from the sidewalks and bridges. (Local lakes have thick, safe ice -- the river was just barely OK.) (Video shot by Tim Potter. • Tim's singing is good

  • As for poles while skating, it's good XC ski skate training, very much like road training on roller skis. Your pole tips have to be good and sharp, but as you can see the poling is working out just fine. (cameraman)

  • Jeff, please explain the use for poles on speed skates? Can you get them planted at all when you're cruising a nice speed?

I will take my skate poles to the ice next time, but fear they'll be dead weight. Ice rarely points uphil in my neck of the woods. ;-)

  • looks like fun!

  • Sweet! Need to get me some speed skates...
