@direfranchement Battle never had acoustic problems, a small voice, but always placed it very forward, and never had trouble being heard. Dramaticity is a matter of taste, I find Battle's watch?v=CJ1ktNxTgGA *live rendition* much more colorful and emotional than Grist's. Battle's dynamics are outstanding, her trills are placed, the melodic-line is sweet, her runs and legatto are perfect.Grist almost missed a trill, and went off-pitch. Their ranges are very similar, but Battle's voice is better.

You state that as though you are speaking fact when in reality you are only speaking of your personal preference. I find Reri Grist to be a more acoustically satisfying soprano, and I personally deem this performance more dramatic and passionate than what I have heard from Battle. Yes, Kathleen Battle has a gorgeous sound and irreproachable technique, but her lack of dynamics renders her performance comparatively bland to my ears. Grist simply had more voice at her disposal.

Outstanding performance, such a gem! But I must say, Kathleen Battle does it better than anyone else, and that includes Reri Grist. Kathleen's pianissimos are much better executed, her trills are simply breathtaking, her High E and High D are prettier than anybody else's, her technique is flawless, her coloraturas precise and perfect, and such a voice! Angelic timbre, celestial tone. But for sure Ms.Grist rendition comes in a close second.

Outstanding singing. She had the finest elfin-lyric voice of the age of recorded sound. Truly one in a million (or more).

@edgarbiervliet Never confuse Kathy Battle with Reri Grist. Reri clearly has the better voice. Her voice is divinely beautiful, and to boot, she was a dedicated artist and humble, never allowing anything to get to hear head. Battle had it easy, which is why she was a spoiled diva.. In the 1980's, Battle had no problems singing in major world opera houses. 80's was long after the Civil Rights Movement and blacks were already international opera stars. Reri had to really struggle!
