News at Seven, the new independent short film, is a passionate, intense urban fable about an arrest in a small southern town that illustrates social issues left unanswered. The cast is lead by veteran Atlanta actor Carey Means and features only Georgia actors. It is directed by Dany Nieves, a Decatur-based commercial photographer making the transition into film making. Magi Kyle and Randy Bratton co-star in this moving drama.

In the film, the south never welcomed the Civil Rights Movement. The concept film is a series of related news stories tell of the arrest and conviction of a man charged with loitering. The politics of segregation play into their lives as well. The economic ramifications of a society that has closed its doors to outside influences are revealed in a very direct manner. The film also underlines news organizations and their coverage of events that shape our society. The film asks 'what if' in a time when civil liberties, social responsibilities and morality are all being called into question. It is a look at ourselves and our neighbors.

Dany Nieves wanted to make bold statement about the perceptions in society and through the news organizations. After watching news clips about celebrities that diverted the nation's attentions from matters that meant more to a society based on individual freedoms, liberties and respect towards one another. The concept was formed with a non-judgmental point of view. The ideas and thoughts contained are formed from well--established historical facts and opinions. "I wanted to show that being Black in America meant more than just being a useful tool. I wanted to make a change in the way we felt about one another".

News at Seven raises several issues. The most important being that we, as consumers and citizens in the most prolific nation in time, now have an opportunity to make a better world not only for ourselves, but for future generations to come.
