Wrong, I'm afraid. A Tonk is someone from Tonkin, one of the old subdivisions of French Indochina (Vietnam). It ran from roughly Nha Trang all the way north. Remember the Gulf of Tonkin Incident? French colonialists found that Vietnamese made excellent laborers throughout the Pacific and elsewhere. And Vanuatu isn't Polynesian, it's Melanesian.

The island is Espiritu Santos, part of the Vanuatu Islands (now called Vanuatu Island). My grandfather was stationed at the Navy base there. I believe there were Navy, Army, and RAF bases on the island.

This is based on James Michener's book Tales of the South Pacific, winner of the 1948 Pulitzer Price for fiction. It takes place on a small island where a USN detachment is stationed, and is a love story between a nurse and a french planter, and a Marine officer and a young girl known as a "tonk" (Vietnamese). Wonderful music such as Bali Hai. Takes place in a war zone. Done as a movie back in the 50's with Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian) and other fab actors. Worth renting from Netflix IMHO.

when is she coming back? I saw the show last night and loved it but i would go again to see her she is supposed to be amazing live.
