Restaurant "Teramachi Shinsetsu" was opened almost 50 years ago by Shigeru Komori (my wife Yoko's father), in Kyoto, Japan. It has been owned and run by the Komori family to this day. With a gift shop on the ground level, and the restaurant upstairs, it is a popular place to stop for a reasonably priced bite to eat while checking out the shops on the Teramachi Shopping Street. It is located at 277 (enpukugimae cho, in Japanese) Teramachi. Having eaten there last year (I had the restaurant's signature dish, the "Shinsetsu Lunch), when we visited Kyoto (my first time in Japan), I can tell you without bias that the food is quite good, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. It is now owned by Shigeru's widow, Etsu Komori (Yoko's Mom), and run by Yoko's son, and my step-son, Keiji (KG) and his wife Misa.

Shinsetsu is a well-known place for the Yoshimoto Shinkigeiki comedy theatre company to relax and eat. The day this video was shot, Comedian Happou Tsukitei and Sakata Toshio visited Shinsetsu to remember the "good old comedy era" of the 1980's. Etsu Komori explained about how (comedian turned politician) Kiyoshi Nishikawa met his wife Helen at Shinsetsu. Kiyoshi even proposed to her in the restaurant at the table next to the one shown in the video. Keiji brought out the old photo albums which show popular comedians of the 1980's who were regular customers of the restaurant. Besides the great food and reasonable prices, they also ate there because of the legend that if you go to Shinsetsu for lunch, you will be a popular comedian. So all comedians from the Kyoto Theatre went to Shinsetsu.

So, the next time you are in Kyoto, and feeling a bit hungry, or looking for a gift to bring home, stop by Shinsetsu and tell Keiji and Misa that Jon & Yoko sent ya.
