ALLEN — Disciplining a child is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting. But when do parents cross the line in reprimanding their kids?
Two married Allen police officers have been placed on leave and face criminal charges after being accused of crossing that line and going too far.
Cpl. Melissa Smith is accused of injury to a child resulting from a February incident with her 11-year-old son.
Melissa Smith assaulted her son with a belt, leaving bruising on his buttocks and red marks on his face," said Lt. John Norton of the Collin County Sheriffs Office, which was asked by Allen police to conduct the investigation.
Sheriff's investigators say when Smith's husband, Allen police investigator Robert Darin Smith, came home, he also disciplined the boy, who is his stepson.
"My understanding is he put the child on the ground, handcuffed him, took him to the police station," Norton said.
Investigators said Smith told the boy he was going to arrest him, sat in the parking lot, talked and then brought him back home.
The officer is charged with official oppression.
Right now, they are on administrative leave with pay," Allen police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Shaw said. "Upon learning of the allegations, they were immediately placed on administrative leave and reassigned."
Melissa Smith has been with the department for six years; her husband, Robert Smith, is a 16-year veteran.
Texas recognizes the common law rule of parental privilege. Parents can argue they used force against their children as a reasonable method of discipline, but it will likely be up to a judge or jury to decide whether the Smiths went too far.

  • Not sure. I don't know bill smith.

  • Melissa should have been canned years ago. She displayed mental instability within the first months of her hiring! Could not have happened to a better person!

  • @dalman34 She's been sick in the head for her whole adult life. I don't know how she made it on the force.

  • u don't get bruises from belt whippings

the mother was probably using a bat

  • I've had my butt smacked with a belt guess what? It leaves a red mark - it leaves a bruise if you start fighting back and get smacked somewhere else. But that shit happens when you squirm.

  • Sounds like all the "good ole boys" in Allen Police Department were on a witch hunt. Official Oppression for taking a boy to a police station to straighten him up? Are you serious??? What's the problem with that? I guess he should have just put the boy in "time out" instead. Melissa spanked her boy with a belt and left "red marks" on the boys face. So, what's the problem with ANY of this? Wow, I was going to apply to Allen police department, as they are hiring, but now I will take not.

  • They got paid vacation for breaking the law? What a fucking corrupt town...

  • OMG I ONCE GOT DISCIPLINED WITH BRUISES ON MY BUTTOCKS TOO! ugh this is why i always hated my dad -_-

  • Any relation to Bill Smith?

  • tragic

  • My opinion....based upon some first hand knowledge, is that she made it on because the department is run by "country" boys who are mentally confused when faced with an attractive female. I wish I was joking about that...had a guy or unattractive woman done what I saw her do while on probation, they would have been fired! This is what they get!
