MissionStatement:
==============
Some of you might have already noticed that today we celebrate 5 years
of Linux kernel development in Git. After looking for an alternative to
Bitkeeper, Linus came up with his own solution and wrote that new tool
he called Git. Exactly 5 years ago, Linus made the the very first commit
into the official Linux kernel Git tree. Therefore we made a little
movie to visualize the source code development of Linux over the past 5
years.
The video was made with Gource, a source code visualization tool. Yes,
there are some bugs in the video, but we found the overall idea way too
cool to not share the result with you. You can find the video online in
different formats. 1080p/720p/360p
We hope you enjoy the video and celebrate 5 years of Linux kernel
development in Git with us.
Thanks.

FAQ:
Q: The timeline is jumping backwards on some occasions, why?
A: Honestly, we do not know. Maybe it is a bug in the git log algorithm,
which flattens the distributed history. On the other hand, it could be a
bug in Gource. We did not have the time to look at it, yet. We hope you
enjoy it anyway.
Q: Why did you do that movie?
A: We found a tool called Gource on the net, which generates videos from
source code repositories. We saw some videos on Youtube showing its
capabilities. There were only videos available showing some tiny
projects or only parts of a development tree. We saw the potential of
it, so we wanted it big! We thought of a movie showing a busy project,
in terms of commits. We wanted to see all people contributing to the
whole tree in action. The result looked astounding, so we rendered the
whole development history of the Linux kernel.
Q: What tools did you use to make the movie?
A: We only used open-source utilities to generate, cut and render the
movie. We obviously used Gource to generate the input files, which were
then packed using 7zip. We cut the movie in OpenShot and rendered
different formats using ffmpeg.
Q: What hardware did you use to make the movie?
A: We used a Lenovo Thinkpad X200 laptop computer running Gentoo Linux.
We ran all tasks on that machine. BTW: The owner was still able to use
it for daily work ;)
Q: Can you give us the exact commands you used?
A: Well, except for OpenShot.
# cd linux-2.6
# gource -1920x1080 -a 1 -s 1 -i 10000000000 --max-files 32767 \ --max-file-lag 3 --hide files --highlight-all-users \ --camera-mode track --disable-bloom --disable-progress \ --stop-at-end --output-framerate 25 --output-ppm-stream - | \ 7z a -si -mx=9 -md=128m -bd linux.ppm.7z
[ Add opening and end credits, as well as music in OpenShot.
Export the video in hd1080p with final AC3 sound and 50Mbps video ]
(transcode with ffmpeg, e.g. for the 360p)
# ffmpeg -i linux_1080p_master.mp4 -r 25 -s 640x360 -an -pass 1 \ -vcodec libx264 -vpre fastfirstpass -b 2000000 -bt 2000000 \ -threads 0 linux_360p.mp4 && \
ffmpeg -y -i linux_1080p_master.mp4 -r 25 -s 640x360 -acodec copy \ -pass 2 -vcodec libx264 -vpre hq -b 2000000 -bt 2000000 \ -threads 0 linux_360p.mp4
Q: The video does not show the full past 5 years, why?
A: That is correct. It only shows upto commit-id
daf9fe2ee9a203c4fc555cfe5c5f3d9f660e743c which was around mid-March. We
needed some time to make the videos. We wanted to release it today,
exactly 5 years after the first commit.
@lx45803 That green ray spamming dev happens to be Linus Torvalds :) Nice video
