Charlton Heston was at a party where Olivier was telling entertaining stories of his life, and Heston noticed that in every story, Olivier was the butt of the joke, or the one who acted foolishly. He may have been really modest, but Heston took it as a great lesson--"If you've got an audience," said Heston, "never tell stories about how wonderful you are."

Have you seen "The Bedsitting Room" by any chance? Ralph is hilarious in that film.

I went ahead and looked this up to make sure I got it right. Perhaps "greet" wasn't the best word, but Garry O'Connor recounts that Charlton Heston once recollected seeing Richardson pat the hood/bonnet of his Bentley and say to the car, "Goodbye, old fellow, back in a while." One of my favorite images of RR, though, is of his slow motorbike rides around his neighborhood with his Spanish-speaking parrot, Jose, perched on his shoulder (he didn't want the bird cooped up in the house all the time).

Yes, a great story, but don't forget the time too that Richardson was looking at artwork in the Oliviers' attic, lost his balance, and literally fell through their ceiling! And of course one of Richardson's biographers recollected how he would actually *greet* his car before getting in. Sir Ralph was a refreshingly bizarre man (and a great actor too).

HAHA that was in celebration of Vivien Leigh's birthday according to Hugo Vickers. Apparently it caught the drapes on fire and Vivien was livid!

Yeah, just before Doppler turns up, I find it very amusing. I think he does a bit of dancing in Oh what a lovely war, but I haven't seen it. According to the biography by Gary Coleman, the story about Ralph Richardson holding Olivier over the balcony in Paris is a fanciful lie!
