Superb footage of the Erskine Hawkins band with an unknown title. Can anyone identify it? "Yvesfrancois" points out that the title of this number is "Swinging In Harlem".
To my great delight Paul Bascomb jr. informed me that it is his father on sax and his uncle Dud "Wilbur" Bascomb on trumpet.

  • Thank you very much for this! I tried to find it on Google - can't find it. Can you just tell me what and where the BJCC is?

  • This is remarkable to find footage of this clarity online, Sammy Lowe(arranger of this piece) was my great uncle. The ability to see him in his youth is amazing he was only 20 years old at the time of this performance. I would love to get more footage if any. I was able to play with some of this guys when they were late in their years but as a teenage I don't think I really appreciated the honor of working with these talent men from down south. We will never forget their impact on Jazz ever

  • It's a great honour to have a relative of Sammy Lowe reacting - many thanks! Yes I agree; the impact these men made on Jazz is tremendous - such a pity that this kind of music is neglected nowadays and that kids are subjected to so much "musical" rubbish.

  • Wow.... So I just recently found out that I am related to a guy named "Walkin Talkin Bill Hawkins" (My grandmother's husbands brother) And this is Bill Hawkins' cousin so I guess I'm related to him somehow lol I dont know what he is to me though. Either way, thanks for this footage, this music is amazing and my brother and I make music as well so I guess It just runs in the family :D

  • @harryoakley Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center, Birmingham AL

  • I spent a few hours with Frank 'Doc' Adams today. He was a student of Fess Whatley, Erskine's teacher. He knew most of the fellows that are in this clip and played with them. I'm part of the cast of a production called TUXEDO JUNCTION at the B We spent the day at the the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and at Tuxedo Junction. I'm blown away by all of the amazing history that I encountered today. These guys changed the world. The show starts in February at the BJCC. You can google if your interested.
