A part of combatting the food crisis in rural El Salvador is giving families and communities the means with which to grow their own food, focusing on sustainability through organic, GMO-free methods when possible. In 2010, The SHARE Foundation is working with over 100 organized women in two regions of the country—Chalatenango and Northern San Salvador-La Libertad—to recieve training in planting and caring for fruits and vegetables and providing the basic materials necessary to make this possible.
The following video is an interview with Ana Ruth, community leader in El Paisnal and participant in the SHARE-UCRES women's project.
UCRES, the Union of Rural Commuities in Northern San Salvador and La Libertad, was founded in March of 1991, when refugees and displaced communities living in the neighboring countries of Honduras and Nicaragua and in other areas of El Salvador decided to return to their places of origin. UCRES became the representative of these communities in the Northern zone of San Salvador and La Libertad. These communities organized with the goal of advocating for respect for civil and political rights and to be considered for development programs, and has grown to include with 34 organized communities today.
