The Tenerife airport disaster in 1977 was a collision involving two Boeing 747 passenger aircraft on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport (now known as Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. With 583 fatalities, the crash remains the deadliest accident in aviation history. All 248 aboard the fully fuelled KLM flight were killed. There were also 335 fatalities and 61 survivors from the Pan Am flight, which was struck along its spine by the KLM's landing gear, under-belly and four engines. Rescue crews were unaware for over 20 minutes that the Pan Am aircraft was also involved in the accident, because of the heavy fog and the separation of the crippled aircraft following the collision.

  • If the Spanish authorities didn't make the planes wait, then this wouldn't have happened, and that KLM pilot made a pretty bad mistake that killed so many people.

Well, think of it this way: When you're getting gas, do you only get enough to get to your destination or do you completely fill up (not counting partial fill-ups just to get to a cheaper gas station)? Your car would be lighter and probably more fuel-efficient without gallons of liquid in it, but most people still completely fill up. And he wasn't expecting to have to clear an obstacle.

  • That Pan Am flight attendant was one of the first ones off that plane, apparently with no intentions of trying to help passengers. Maybe that wasn't a responsibility in the 70's for them though.

  • It makes me sad to see when disasters could be averted if a person speaks up against their superiors, because it's something that will probably keep happening.

  • is this a remake?!

  • that fucking KLM pilot
