  • correct me if im wrong but i thought the m249 SAW was chambered for 30 cal ?

  • @MariusInk

M249 is chambered in 5.56x45. The M240 GPMG is chambered in 7.62x51 (30 cal.)

  • @scollins1868 the 7.62 nato is different from the 30 cal... they are similar but the 7.62 nato was made to replace the 30 cal...

    7.62x51 nato

    7.62x63 .30-06

  • @TheDynoSoar Wow, really? In all the years I've been an avid shooter, reloader and firearms dealer, I never knew that (rolling my eyes obviously.) To those of us not older than dirt, ".30 cal" references a bore diameter, not a particular cartridge. So the following are ".30 cal" class cartridges: 308 Winchester, 7.62x51, .30-'06, .300 Win Mag, etc. etc. Even my M1 Garands don't say ".30 cal" on them, they say "Cal .30 M1".

  • why would u want to fire a SAW with a 30 mag

  • It was intended as a backup in case the SAW gunner ran out of belted ammo. He could then use the 30 round magazines from his squadmates M16s and M4s. The Navy variants (Mk46 Mod 0 or Mod 1) have removed the magazine well, so they no longer have this capability (weight reduction measure.)

  • Anyone in the military knows that the 249 is a bear to keep it firing from the steel mags. You must have made a winner here if he was able to fire all 30 rounds.

  • @MariusInk correction, it is a 5.56mm Nato round, along with the big momma saw, the original one, ur mistakin with the M240B which is 7.62mm nato round but in civilian terms, its is a 30 cal round, i think it may be a 30.6 round.

  • If they made a semi auto version of the saw for civilian consumers. We would deck that thing out to the max. FN makes the 249 and it just happens John Moses Browning went to FN with his ideas before his death. Its a great little gun I liked em when I was in the military.

  • @scollins1868 wow dont be such a prick, i was just putting down the facts. relax dude.

  • @MariusInk there is a version that fires 7.62 NATO, actually. However the standard version uses 5.56 NATO, as you already know.

  • @Nater245689 Yeah and I bet that the PMAG is cheaper than the mags they are buying now. I can get 1 PMAG now for 14.20 shipped. Think if I wanted 100,000 units.

  • I have some PMAGs and they're awesome. I don't know why the US military doesn't just license them and supply them in massive numbers. The ground forces always get screwed when it comes to new equipment.

  • THE M-249 DOES HAVE A MAG PORT TO ACCEPT M-16/AR-15 MAGS BUT THE SPRING IN THE MAG IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH THE M-249'S CYCLIC RATE AND THAT IS WHY IT WILL JAM WHEN FIRING FROM A MAGAZINE.
