This is the stove I will be using on my thru hike. It's the caldera cone ti-tri and comes with an alcohol stove, or you can build a fire in it to cook with. I'm using the msr titan kettle.

  • How can you tell which pot(s) the Caldera Cone is created for? Yours is obviously a large pot but in a different video the guy's Cone fits a Snow Peak 600 cup perfectly.

  • @sygyzy

You order it for a certain pot. Mine is the MSR titan kettle, so I ordered one to fit it exactly. Trail Designs has a list on their website for the different pots they can make it fit to.

  • ok thanks. i was actually talking about the burn temperature, not the actual time it takes to get it going and whatnot i should have been more specific sorry! do you think the alcohol burns hotter than wood?

  • @loufromlou

I'm not sure which is hotter. The alcohol is probably more efficient. From the time I put the pot down on the fire or over alcohol, I would say alcohol usually had the quicker boiling time. The wood fire doesn't get as much oxygen and doesn't burn as well when I put the pot on top of it. If I had the inferno insert, it would probably work better because it gets more oxygen to the fire from underneath. So in that case it may have a quicker boiling time with the fire.

  • does the wood burning take longer to boil the water than the alcohol or the tablets?

  • @loufromlou

I would say yes. Alcohol would usually take about 8-10 minutes to boil, not sure on exact times, never timed it while on the trail. Wood burning was more of a sit down and slow down event for me. I did meet one guy that made a fire almost every night to cook on.

For the wood burning I had to gather wood, get the fire going alright and then place my pot on it. So it took longer.

  • @HydeMyJekyll

The thru hike went well, had a great time.

  • nice idea with the pencil sharpener! very creative and functional. how did the thru-hike go? lol i use alcohol a lot, too... but only to cook myself.

  • I know a big factor for me in choosing between woodburning and just going with the alcohol stove is is LNT. I think its great to have the wood burning option in case of some emergency, but I would stick to the alcohol as much as possible. nice vid and thanks for posting!

  • I hadn't heard of the Caldera so I was just checking out their website. Interesting design. Very light and packable. Have you had yours for long?

  • Great video! Glad to see a video abou the Ti-Tri - I'm really interested in getting it. Thanks so much!

  • I like the pencil sharpener idea too. They make really small ones that would be lighter and take up less space.

  • Yes, I find a dry stick and get some shavings from it.

  • Good idea with the pencil sharpener. You just use that with sticks you collect?
