JEFFERSON CITY - Hundreds gathered Wednesday to celebrate the life and legacy of Missouri's 46th Governor, Warren Eastman Hearnes.
Friends and family say Hearnes was a dedicated public servant and father. They remember him as a passionate supporter of mental health awareness and treatment, pushing legislation expanding the state's services beyond institutionalization.
Another initiative touted by those who remember Hearnes' time in office is his support of higher education in Missouri. He backed the funding and creation of two community colleges that later became four-year institutions.
Hearnes' wife of 60 years, Betty, was at the service and spent time by the casket greeting mourners. She kept a smile on her face for the most of the event, but took a private moment to reach out and touch her husband's casket in the rotunda.
All of Missouri's living former governors were on hand, except Kit Bond and Joe Teasdale. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and Rep. Ike Skelton also attended the funeral.
Following the funeral and eulogy by Gov. Jay Nixon, Hearnes' hearse pulled around to the Capitol's south side while Apache helicopters flew over and service members shot off 19 cannons.
Hearnes will be buried later this week.
