Yes I grew up in that era where teachers had to stay and live in which
ever village they were teaching. Each family in the village were taking turn feeding the teachers while they live there. One bus in the entire district. I have to live in Mulinu'u while attending Leififi and then to Samoa College in the early 60's and only go home to my village in Lefaga (family) once a month if I was lucky enough to have a six pence bus fare then. I remember those days like it were yesterday

This hymn reminds me of my grandfather, a teacher from the 1940s to 1981 and fiercely proud of TTC. One of several teachers of that era that had to go out and stay in the villages they were teaching in because there were no roads back in those days to kua. Some villages he had to get in the paopao and paddle across the water to get to them. The hymn reminds me of those teachers, the early nation-builders that had the job of educating a generation in a country that was preparing for independence.

Ally must've meant the dances Tonga has borrowed, lol.
-
@Allynalama And what exactly could point out as Tongan and elements of other nearby cultures that have been mixed into traditional dances and songs?
-
When you mention the word Traditional. It's really hard to narrow it down to what. As to some of the traditional songs and dances are a mixture of different islands.(tonga and other nearby islands.) Dated back 100's or yrs ago. But as for the current songs and dances we do know at the present. You're right. One can tell the difference. As I watched a floor show at the old Sadie's.Not the one by the sea..
To me! Something seem to be missing and It didnt feel natural. If that's correct word.

@petelosuaniu It sounds so good is because this is the true Samoan style of singing hymns. If Samoans stick to their true style, for sure it's gonna sound beautiful, and perhaps you're going to have a wonderful spiritual experience - you might see angels. lol! But seriously, if Samoans try to sing it opera or R&B style, it sucks. The same goes with our traditional dances; if we do it the true Samoan way, & get rid of the non-traditional moves, instruments & singing, they won't sound nasty.

I remember the memorial service in malaeola (auckland) on the death of the late Malietoa Tanumafili II. The service ended with this hymn and one of the rare times I have heard all the verses sung and the crowd rose to the occasion and sung it beautifully. There were many non-Samoan dignitaries there that night and one of them said to me that it was one of most beautiful hymns he has ever heard. This hymn is the definitive expression of Samoan nationalism

@MrFika03 yeah definitely CDs floating around, depending were you are. Auckland flea markets if in NZ. I got a collection of 5stars, TCC and other CDs from the flea market in Waikiki. There's one man that sells only Samoan gears, dvds, sounds and accessories.
