Sending crack troops into what was basically a public order situation is plain madness. The Paras should not even have been there. It was the failure of the RUC (mainly Protestant) to command any sort of respect or trust in the Bogside (mainly Catholic). It's like using a sledgehammer to stick a drawing pin into a notice board.
