Ask the Adobe Ones - 33: Got crack?
Where did that end user license agreement go? Kush helps you locate the fine print and cautions about fake deals that seem too good to be true.
Transcript:
Hi I'm Kush and you are watching Ask the Adobe Ones. The other day I saw this picture on lolcats and the kitteh iz saying "Adobe called, they revoked yer Photoshop licence".
Speaking of the licence, I know that some of you are too excited to start working with your brand new software so you don't take the time to read all that licence agreement stuff so you probably just click the yes I agree what ever button and continue installing. Then later on, you might wonder about certain things and wonder where to actually read that document.
For example, Raymond was wondering:
If he is allowed to install the software on his laptop beside the main computer it is on without running into licensing issues?
Well, I'm pretty sure the answer to that question is some where in that document that you agreed to when you installed the software but now what? Are you supposed to install it all over again just to get to that screen? Well, there's got to be a better way. We could of course ask extra H to call the lawyers again but since he has a self imposed restraining order, I decided to just look for the licence agreement myself. Well, it's on this URL right here but it's just one click from the adobe.com home page. Just scroll down to the bottom and there it is, the tiny text link that says Product Licence agreements. When you click on that, you get a full list of products with their corresponding end user licence documents available in Adobe pdf format.
So, in Raymond's specific case, it turns out, yes we can install it on to a second computer as long as both are not running it at the same time. Actually if you try to, you might encounter activation issues so make sure you do it carefully if you decide to do so. Again, that's for that particular package, and don't take my word for it, I suggest you read the terms relevant to your case carefully.
At least I'm glad he is mindful about these things, unlike some people who ask me if I can just hand over a serial number or activation code just like that. Well, I wish it was that simple but the thing is we can only afford to make a living making these software if people pay for it. Keep in mind that Adobe does have service and subscription based tools and even has some open source initiatives going on. Ok, other than the whole legal and ethical aspect of this issue, I have to say that software coming from questionable sources are not only just incomplete but could be downright dangerous now a days. When I was a poor kid, the worst thing a virus could do was to corrupt my files but nowadays, those things can do anything from stealing your identity to emptying your bank account. So if you see something fishy going on, you should not only stay away from it but alert us so we can try to prevent others falling into these traps.
For example, Krystal asked me if I think a site she found that seem to sell large collections of Adobe software really cheap is a fake. Well, just by looking at the file sizes I could tell that what they claim it is couldn't fit in a download like that. So yes that site you sent me is in fact not a real Adobe software site. You can report sites like that to piracy@adobe.com so we can try to stop innocent people being tricked or worse.
And of course, if you want to try something out before buying, you can download it for free from adobe.com\downloads or in some cases, order a trial DVD for a small fee.
Ok, so as I promised last time, I now have the blog of the week. If you are interested in any Adobe video tools, checkout the Video Road. Hmm that guy looks just like my good friend Karl Soule, that's because he is Karl Soule. You'll find a lot of interesting thoughts about Adobe tools, his world wide adventures, pranks fellow Adobe ones play between each other and things like that.
In the mean time you can keep sending in your video question links and e-mails to ask@adobe.com - your licence to Ask the Adobe ones.
So if a bunch of guys armed with AK-47s and RPGs comes aboard your ship while you sail through Somali waters and they say they have serial numbers to CS4 you should be worried because that's not normal.
