I love this interpretation of the "Antonia Scene"
Set in a pit with the uncovered double bass to suggest that this is happening some time between rehearsal and performance - and then the curtain goes up to reveal the "Queen of the Night".... nice piece of operatic theatre. Whose production was it?

@Phabathanbob I love this production, too! I think the opera is Don Giovanni (hence the statue, although it's headless :)) and that the Mother is most likely playing Donna Elvira (the most suitable for her voice type), but it's all interpretation, isn't it ... She is truly terrifying.

I just don't 'get' Terfel's voice. It lacks bottom (cuz he's not a real bass) and yet the top notes don't have that 'heft' you expect in a 'Wagner' voice. Granted, Hoffmann is merciless to the bass lead- three different voices in one opera. But even so, just listening to an old Sutherland- Justino Diaz You Tube, I much prefer his sound to Terfels'. Of course, no one could beat George London in this role! My two cents.....

It's wonderfully sung. Bryn Terfel & Ruth Ann Swenson are terrific. I don't like how they have Bryn as a conductor and not the evil magician Dr. Miracle (is this a new change ?) I prefer the old-fashioned 19th century melodrama for this scene. I do however love Antonia's mother, she's a ghost/ghoul, a dead opera singer of an earlier time (Baroque or Mozart's Vienna) risen from the dead by Dr. Miracle's witchcraft.

this is creepy... lol but I LOVE it.

Lovely, I love the mezzo as well. Where and when did this take place? I love this mise in scene.

I love this - I own the DVD and I saw it in Paris a couple of years ago.
Ruth Ann Swenson is wonderful - cannot act? Well - this performance shows different. Big? maybe at home in your TV but not on stage. And you tend to forget a couple of kilos when the voice is so beautiful.

mais c'est quoi cette mise en scène? Pourquoi des bons chanteurs se rabaissent en chanter dans CA.
Ruth Ann Swenson is so wonderful. Why is she SO underrated?

is said she's not a good actress...and also she's fat. But the reason i agree the most is that the voice has an empty soul. It doesn't transmit anything special. That's why.

"..and also she's fat." What an ignorant remark this is. Ms. Swenson is an accomplished singer in her own right. What does body size have to do her abilities? And as far as your "voice has an empty soul...doesn't transmit anything..." What would you say of Sutherland? A remarkable talent, but no acting abilities and no feeling in the voice...YET a major contributor to the operatic world. MEASURE your words before expressing them!

i'm remarking Gelb's and specialists opinions, on what they said in the news about her. I didn't say that, passionate opera lover...
