@Stijn: You know, I had never even considered that it might be a defect. The bike only had 800 miles when I got it so it seems unlikely, but you never know! I will check that out, thanks bud. And if it isn't a defect, I'll figure out some creative wiring to fix it anyway ;)

@hibob841 Maybe your clutch lever switch was broken? I had that on my beemer once, and I couldn't start unless in neutral.. They replaced the switch, and then I could just start when squeezing the clutch lever :)

Ducatis are the same way and I have killed my battery a couple of times that way. I have no idea why that feature was deemed necessary; none of my Japanese bikes had it and I never missed it. Of course, my Duc also does not allow you to start it in gear, even with the sidestand up and the clutch disengaged. Go figure...

For goodness sake, just find a Granny with a pacemaker.

That's how you do it..but didn't work for me a couple weeks ago.

The RT's are the same way, with the parking light at least. A lot of people permanently mount jump cables to their battery and then run them underneath the seat so fairings don't have to be taken off in an emergency.
Funny I just push a button on mine.

the manual actually tells you not to start her this way & jump start with battery cables instead.
A beautiful machine though.
