A Secular State? - Israel

The number of strict ultra-orthodox Jews in Israel is increasing, sparking fears its secular character is under attack. Many resent the special treatment the orthodox community receives.

"They do not serve in the army. They pay almost nothing as taxes", complains Alon Nativ. Thanks to their high birth rate, Israel's ultra-orthodox community is growing fast. This has led to a series of confrontations with secularists. In September, a delicatessen which sold pork was firebombed while a planned gay pride march provoked violent protests. There are fears secular Israelis will be forced to adapt ultra-orthodox practises. Women have to sit in separate areas from men on some buses after pressure from the orthodox community.

@BlackNationaIistHero Did you not listen to what the member of the Knesset said about civil marriage not being available in Israel? The state of Israel reserves the right to determine to which community a person belongs, and officially register him or her accordingly even when the person concerned objects to being part of a religious community. How does that classify as Israel being secular?

A secular state doesn't pass laws based on religious doctrine and stays neutral on religious matters.

Religion can be inherently discriminatory, racist, homophobic and patriarchal...Jews Christians and Muslims have sects that diminish the dignity of women and some even execute homosexuals and anyone who challenges their concept of divine authority, as in blasphemy. I think such attitudes have more to do with fear and control than a real Creator... Mee thinks God did not write holy books nor authorize them, men did.

The fact they are willing to firebomb other Jews in their own "holy land" is a big sign that it doesnt mean that much to them.. There is a fundamental flaw with judaism that lies in their bigotry and superiority complex built right into their religion.

The orthodox Jews are correct. There is no such thing as a secular Jew. It is a religion. They invented the state in 1948.

Jews are usually Semites. Just like their Palestinian, Arab and Persian neighbors.

Israel is illegal state anyways...If God promised them Palestine then why are they not implementing God's law? God never promised them anything thats why. After all the prophets that came to them and many dying in their hands....God promised them life of paradise on earth and a eternal torment hereafter...enjoy your lives.
