Susan and Michael Hort have collected contemporary art since the mid-80s, buying the first John Currin painting ever sold and fostering the early careers of Elizabeth Peyton, Neo Rauch, and Marlene Dumas. The Horts have developed a collection of over 2,000 pieces, hundreds of which are loaned out to museums or installed in a rotating exhibition at their Tribeca home.
The Horts aren't just collectors - they support emerging artists through the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, which helps artists not yet represented by a gallery. The foundation also provides travel grants to help families during cancer treatment, and Artlog recently partnered with the Rema Hort Mann Foundation on its Girls Just Want to Have Funds benefit.
For our video spotlight, Artlog talked with the Horts about how they started collecting contemporary art, their relationships with artists like Currin and Wiley, and the foundation. You can also browse their virtual collection of artwork listed on Artlog, which showcases new work by artists they collect.
