This is true but I enjoy listening to music that exceeds other's limitations. There are players like Warren Haynes and John Mayer who solo using a lot of pentatonic and blues but it's because they go "out of the box" every now and then, literally, that makes them more enjoyable to listen to.

extreme use of modes, scales, and arpeggios doesn't make or break a musician. i could listen to clapton play pentatonic riffs all day. good music is good music, level of difficulty and complication has nothing to do with expressing oneself through music.

Eric Clapton is most known for his songwriting, not his guitar playing. His guitar playing is above average. He's a straight blues and pentatonic player; rarely uses the modes, melodic minor, harmonic minor, diminished7th, whole tone scales or arpeggios and I can go on. There are so many better guitar players that just haven't gotten the admiration they deserve.

who cares if he cant do all that shit.... guitar playing is a shitload more than technicality..... its allll emotion... expecially clapton..... and for mayer.... he learned from all the old blues masters..... such as b.b and buddy guy.... therefor... blues being soully based on feeling.... has nothing to do with technicality.... take albert king for example.... used the a or Am box for all of his songs.... some solos only contained two to three notes.... and sound better than most hm solo's
