The Harlem-based blues duo of Sterling "Mr. Satan" Magee and Adam Gussow putting a new twist on Big Walter Horton's cover of Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."
Gussow learned this tune from Big Walter's album, FINE CUTS. He brought it to Sterling and it quickly became a part of the duo's live set at Kelly's, a lesbian bar in Greenwich Village, where they had a steady gig in the fall of 1990. In performance, the old slow Big Walter version seemed a little outdated, so they double-timed it in the second go-round. They recorded this take at Giant Sound, a NYC studio, in February 1991, only a few months before their debut album, HARLEM BLUES, was released.

It's so crazy to hear Mr. Satan's feet maintaining a simple, straight beat, while his fingers are just going crazy. I also love the revival style rhytmic switch-up around 2:00. Anybody who isn't already tapping their toe must certainly give in to the driving tempo at that point. Then at 4:00, y'all bring it back home, relaxing back into the swing after the intense run. On top of clearly great instrumental chops, the rise and fall of the arrangement is really smart. I just really dig this.

Outstanding guitar work by Mr. Satan. I love the way the song swings, and all of the tempo changes. This is really good stuff.
