The ophthalmology service at the UT Veterinary Medical Center participated in the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam event in May. In an effort to promote the importance of eye health in animals that we, as a society depend on every day, our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists invited the region's Service Dogs and their handlers to participate. 20 certified service dogs, including several who performed search and rescue duties in Tuscaloosa, Al following the deadly tornado outbreak in April, 2011, received free eye exams. This is the second year the service has participated in the national event.
