My son made this film of his Grandfather talking about his experiences in the Royal Navy during World War II especially the D-Day landings on Juno Beach.
Dad passed away in May 2003, Mum died in 2007. We're very fortunate to have this video.

  • This is extremely moving and humblilng.

Your grandad was obviously an ordinary bloke, but like so many of his generation he did extraordinary things. We owe them an enormous debt for our freedom.

You did right to post this video, and I am sure your grandad will be looking down, proud that his story is being told.

  • Many thanks for your kind words.

  • My late dad landed on Sword Beach with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers on D Day. I wish I'd recorded his story as you have here.

Like you I used to get all his stories and loved it all very much. Bullets flew around our living room quite a lot. lol!

The war affected my dad. Someone once said there was no such thing as a soldier who wasn't wounded.

Dad read only war books, he never forgot his best mate who died in Troarn, near Caen. No post war syndrome then.

    Enjoyed your video, mate.

  • Thanks for telling me your story, I wasn't sure that posting Dad's story here on You Tube was the right thing to do. Hearing from people like yourself makes me feel it was the right thing after all, thanks you.

  • Enjoyed watching this very much. Thanks for sharing!

  • Many thanks for letting me know, it's greatly appeciated. If you have time, please have a look at part two.

  • We're losing a generation of humble heroes. Thanks for posting this antidote to typical "Hollywood history" showing only US forces. The 2nd Rangers in "Saving Private Ryan" were carried by RN LCAs from British ships. Spielberg had US-crews and vessels instead because he "wanted to make an American film", as if the US view of WW2 hadn't been filmed umpteen times before! Insultingly, he wasted an opportunity to hint at the collaborative nature of D-Day when the majority of troops weren't even US.

  • Great Video, my grandfather served too
