Moving on, the 14th course in Sonic Riders is Digital Dimension. One of the few things nowadays that SEGA puts out with Sonic before Nintendo puts out with Mario, Digital Dimension has a heaven-and-hell motif. I'm pretty sure Nintendo was pretty hesitant because the attorneys figured litigious watchdogs would go to court over Christian references. Digital Dimension appeared in Sonic Riders and nothing big happened, so Nintendo went ahead and created the Underwhere and Overthere in Super Paper Mario.

Of course, this isn't a direct heaven-and-hell theme. It's actually the Chao Garden. It begins with the Devil Chao realm, warps into the Angel Chao realm, the simulator breaks down and we see the VR room as it really is, and restores itself back to the Devil Chao decor at the end of a lap. In Sonic Adventure 2, a Chao will lean towards one of these two sides, depending on how well they're treated and whether they're treated by the heroes (Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles) or the villains (Shadow, Eggman, or Rouge). They take on angel-like and devil-like characteristics, and realms are unlocked resembling Heaven and Hell where they'd be more comfortable.

Also, the starting line gate is just as awesome as it's ever been. It's something most people don't pay much attention to, but I find them very creative. (They keep up the good work in Zero Gravity. My favorite is the one in Aquatic Capital.)

As we're into the last few courses of the game, I've chosen NiGHTS, the acrobat in purple who flies and glides across people's dreams. A fixture of SEGA during the Saturn era designed to compete directly with Mario 64, a few big marketing stumbles (mainly with Bernie Stolar in charge of SEGA of America) turned it into the biggest sleeper hit ever made and was unfortunately the Saturn's early last gasp. A sequel has come out for the Wii, where NiGHTS was given a voice, but as this preceded NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, NiGHTS is still mute in this. The Gear used is the Night Sky, the default gear. Nothing special about it.

  • is nights a boy or girl?

  • @bongnbolado Neither.

  • "she makes a nice landing" ??? I thought Nights was neither a boy nor girl

  • @LoveTheSonic I feel like Omochao just randomly chooses between male and female pronouns for NiGHTS.

  • You know I always had the theory that Omochao was a real lady, not just a robot chao like she appears in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Free Riders. I thought of that metal chao as some kind of answering machine replaying her voice whereas she's busy elsewhere, e.g. doing her job as the mayor of Grand Metropolis or something... xD

  • @Atjme Omochao is male.
