i saw this on american chopper, it also showed the rows and rows of fallen soilders buried under white marble crosses.

When I was there I heard that the most of the craters were "dug" for a movie recorded in the 50's.
So I was all like D:

Probably linked the 'The Longest Day' movie. I have seen aerial photos of the Pointe du Hoc from June 1944 which show it potmarked all over by bombs (and inland as well). Maybe the craters were 'tidied up' in 1950 to make them more like they were in 1944.
