@walshy2866 The tune was originally a Croatian folk song, which went "Stal se jesem vjutro ranmo, rano pred zorjom" or "Vjutro se ja rano stanem, ravno pred zorjom". Haydn then adapted it for his Kaiserhymne which went "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, unsern guten Kaiser Franz" which then became the national anthem of Austrian Empire. Then Hoffman wrote the Deutschlandlied lyrics to the tune.

The tune was a hymn WAY WAY before it became the German national anthem my friends.
A true Protestant hymn too , as it offers praise to God and not Jesus as most of the Roman Catholic hymns do.
Quite fitting that it became the tune to the German national anthem, as that was the birthplace of the Glorious Revolution and the beginning of Protestantism back in the 16th century
