This is a clip of William Hartnell from the 1962 film This Sporting Life. It was the part of Johnson in this film that brought him to the attention of original Doctor Who producer Verity Lambert. Also featured in the clip is a young Richard Harris.
Hartnell was brilliant here, playing a gentle old man, as opposed to his usual tough guy roles. And this, they say, is what got him the offer of a job playing a mysterious time traveller for the BBC...
Ahhh.... THIS is where they got the shot of Hartnell for the "Daleks Master Plan" reconstruction! (They couldn't find a picture of the elderly guy who played a bit part in the Christmas episode, so they slipped Hartnell in this get-up in there instead!)
beautiful, hartnell was such a fantastic actor - this clip proves how much he can raise hearts. He did it several times as the Doctor. Wonderful. thanks

@JuanMacready Actually he was a bit like Brando, but I wouldn't say he was trying to impersonate him

A dated, boring film with an overage Richard Harris doing a Marlon Brando impression.

I couldn't agree more! There are some very, very intense scenes in this film. It's absolutely wonderful!
