I am hoping that this is a fun way to enjoy some new artists and new videos. The most important aspect of these "contests" is not the outcome, rather, it is exploring new artists and differnt styles. At least that is what I hope my videos represent. This is a fun aria so enjoy.
Again a score of 1-5 for singing/characterization:
Kathleen Battle - 1988
Ileana Cotrubas - 1986
Beverly Sills - 1979
Luciana Serra - 1996
Inva Mula - 2005
Lillian Watson - 1980
Ying Huang - 1997
Edita Gruberova - 1977
Nancy Hermiston - 1993
Susanna Rigacci - 1993
Patrizia Ciofi - 2007
Isable Rey - 2006
Mariella Devia - 1982
Ruth Ann Swenson - 1987 (sorry for the poor quality of this one)

  • Like I tell everyone. I have an opinion. You may not like it, but that's your problem, not mine. Opera is a subjective experience, and that's what makes it great. I happen to like this voice, since you're having a problem with your reading comprehension skills. I should be able to come here and voice an opinion without some jerk calling me an ass. If you don't like what I have to say, no one is forcing you to read it. Grow up.

  • grande Ileana.

  • I like Gabriella Sciutti's version to everyone else's.

  • Ooooooooh oooooh oooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh

I just realized what it is....

When Cotrubas sang... it's like I'm not listening to a disembodied sound - I'm usually listening for top notes, and middle notes and bottom notes, because that's what most singers these days do, they sing and you just are geared, ready to hear a sound you want to hear, and here - that is not the case at all. Her whole entire voice - top to bottom - has this core in it that goes right through you! It has heart!

  • Ms. Cotrubas is "MAGNIFICA, UNIQUE AND VERY ORIGINAL." wHAT wonderful voice she has. I understand why Placido Domingo sang La Traviata with her. She is perfecta.

  • @pagerbear and I am sure will still do! ;). What wil think our children when they see what a Netrbko, or an Elina Garança wear on stage today!

  • Perfection from a totally treasurable artiste

  • II saw her 2-3 times in the late 60,s early seventies. Most beautiful eyes and facial expressions. Voice had, and retained girlish flashes throughout life, like hints of violets in red wine. Violetta from Covent Garden about 1979, magic.

Physically elfin and lovely in Pelleas and Melisande 1967, Glyndebourne, when I was about 18. Never any need for us to abandon our critical faculties, but let us be grateful for all the glorious singers we have and can now enjoy.

  • I love this, but her trill never came into fruition... maybe 10 to 15 years earlier, this would've sounded better.

  • Splendida Ileana!

Sai anche tu la virtu' magica!

    Pieni voti: 5/5

    Brava !!!

    Grazie per il post

  • Cat Stevens wore a similar Cleopatra-style dress last season on So You Think You Can Dance. Ileana Cotrubas was ahead of her time!

I love her. 5/5. Sure there are a few slips, but this is a live performance. The woman was a tremendous artist.
